'What a shame it is take all these plastics to the landfill site!'
Leveraging on its concern for environment-related issues, Galdi seized this simple observation made by one of its workers and got in touch with a nearby Recycling Centre (Centro Riciclo Vedelago) to see if something more could be done.
The two companies partnered in July 2011 and yielded excellent results: the volume of Galdi's waste which was hence destined for the landfill was cut down to 70%, with 33% savings in disposal costs.
'We are very satisfied with the collaboration with Centro Riciclo Vedelago', says Galdi's manager of the 'Galdi Thinks Green' project. 'We started off from a careful analysis of our waste which was brought to the landfill up to then, and tried to figure out what more could be done in terms of separation and recycling. Among others, we were positively surprised at the possibility to recycle the plastic glasses used by our coffee percolator or the plastic plates of our canteen. Since the first training steps, the new recycling concept has involved the whole of Galdi's staff, who actively and pro-actively participated in the initiative. This made us think that a recycling culture was already inborn in our company.
Also, Galdi's managers have 'estimated that the upfront investment in training, installation of collection devices, and advertising signs can be recouped in less than two years' effective separation. However, what really counts for Galdi is giving its contribution to leave a healthier and cleaner environment to future generations'.
