Galdi: one year as a Benefit Corporation

An array of projects and activities has kept us busy during our first year as a Benefit Corporation. Find out more about the results we have achieved so far in our Impact Report

We have been involved in a number of projects and actions in our first year as a Benefit Corporation.

We are happy to share them in our first Impact Report.

A firm commitment for the common benefit

Becoming a Benefit Corporation is something we would recommend to any company.

Being a "business that operates responsibly" is first and foremost an ethical choice - more than necessary, - but it also brings clear benefits, as it:

  • Helps boost your reputation
  • Makes you more attractive to the market and to young talents
  • Guarantees advantages in accessing tenders and funding
  • Enables you to join a network of companies with the same values

Notwithstanding all these benefits, the required commitment cannot be underestimated and is far from mere cosmetics. In fact, the transition requires mobilising dedicated resources and covers all aspects of how a company operates.

As a Benefit Corporation, we are currently involved in several projects related to the common benefit goals we included in our Impact Report.

Every year, we have to report on the results we have achieved in a transparent way and the outcomes are then used to assess our impact.

What has changed within Galdi?

Those who have known Galdi for years are aware that our company has carried out several activities related to the top key issues for Benefit Corporations, particularly sustainability, community engagement and employee well-being.

In other words, "we felt we were ready for this change".

Internally, one of the most important innovations was the appointment of an Impact Manager, who coordinates the projects with the support of a dedicated team.

The team is made up of colleagues who are personally committed to the development of the projects and to sharing the goals we are striving to achieve.

They are the ones who actively promote and talk about current topics and initiatives with all employees, perhaps over a coffee at the Galdi Village.

Promoting and "spreading a shared sense of responsibility" toward the local community and our suppliers - through joint events and initiatives - is just as important to us.

After all, common benefit means it is for everyone.

From goals to results: a few examples

We share here some of the goals and results we have achieved as a Benefit Corporation:

People

At Galdi, physical and mental well-being is an important consideration for both employees and company managers.

With this in mind, in 2022 we started a Mindfulness class in our Fitness Area and a Personal Trainer specialised in postural stability and functional movement is now available to employees during certain hours.

In 2023, the opening hours of the Fitness Area are going to be extended and we also offer new postural well-being courses, personalised according to job tasks.

Environment

We took several steps to reduce our environmental and energy impact.

Here are a few examples:

  • By replacing 350 lighting points with new-generation LED bulbs, we estimate a 39% reduction in consumption for lighting in production departments and offices.
  • In 2002 we doubled the percentage of company EVs. The goal for 2023 is to replace more cars with plug-in and mild hybrid models.
  • 2022 saw an improvement in all data related to (Scope 1 and 2) CO2 emissions, which have decreased by 19% compared to 2019.
  • In 2022, average consumption of water per employee in the Galdi Village has decreased from 17 to 15 litres. The phyto-purification system in the building also ensures that waste water returns to the aquifer in the original condition.

Community

As a Benefit Corporation, we strive to have a positive impact on the area in which we are based and live.

This has been a long standing commitment we are going to reaffirm further by:

  • Actively engaging with the community (e.g.: events at the Galdi Village)
  • Supporting local cultural and social initiatives and associations (such as SOL.CO. and the Sustainable Eco Network project by Ricrearti)
  • Participating in projects with other companies on the subject of sustainability
  • Company visits and various activities with local schools and universities (sponsoring dissertation projects, supporting school projects such as Girls Code It Better for secondary school girls and EUREKA! IT WORKS! with elementary school children.

Supporting our supply chain is another top priority at Galdi, both to make it more competitive and also to increase awareness of issues related to sustainability.

For instance, in 2023 we hosted an event for our suppliers on "Confirming" - a Supply Chain Financing project for early access to credit.

We are also finalising both our internal Code of Ethics and also the Code of Ethics for our suppliers, which is an opportunity to share the principles that are important to us and build a common vision.
